The past grabs our focus with our coulda woulda shoulda’s.
The future ‘what if’s?’ build spins of worry or over excitement that take us off into fantasy land.
They are both interesting creations…
The past gets twisted in hindsight, haunts the now and colors the choices we think have in the future.
The future is undefined and very uncertain yet we project ourselves there constantly in an attempt to control it and figure it out. Neither are real.
They are creations of the mind. Only the now is real and true.
So how do you be in the now? With what actually is?
Well… You may have heard about this thing called presence.
Being here. Now. No filter. No spin. Eyes and heart open. Ready to go.
You may have also noticed it’s quite a lofty idea and can be seemingly ungettable…
Depending on your past studies and practices you may have been around the block with this a time or two with varying success.
One of my ever-present questions throughout my life has always been
‘how do I become more present?’
I, like you, have tried it all…
Yoga calmed me and put me in touch with my body.
Meditation quieted my mind and brought a deeper state of rest.
Access Bars sessions cleared the energetic clutter I didn’t even know I had and made more space for change.
All of these did, and still do, create massive amounts of presence building footholds for me to play with.
But I find one of the most effective ways to build presence is just being in the moment.
Without the need to act or react. Or change something. Or shoo it away.
Or fly off to fantasy at what may be next.
The willingness to be with what is – not what I want it to be or what it should be – creates the presence that really quiets me, gives me clarity and allows me to see the next possible steps I could take.
It also has the amazing side effect of unfurling my awareness to the moments otherwise looked over…
The shared laughter with a stranger I would have ignored or been too busy to notice.
The subtle invitations to spontaneous and random adventures.
The way the sunlight hits the tip top of the trees kissing them good morning as it rises.
The breath that fills into my back ribs calming me and letting me know that I’m okay.
The simple moments that make up life… And make it beautiful to live.
What if you started wondering about being in the moment?
If every time your head references the past or projects into the future you came back to the now?
If you ask yourself:
What can I be present with right now to create____?
And followed the tugs of intuition where ever it leads you?
Presence in the now is a muscle to build and can sometimes seem out of reach.
If your mind carries you away at times no worries…
Don’t make yourself wrong. Don’t struggle. Don’t judge.
Just come back to the now with wondering eyes and a curious state.
Rinse. Repeat. Enjoy.
